Will we eat today? A question that haunts thousands of displaced families in Gaza

The food stampede has returned to the displacement camps in the Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip, with hundreds of displaced people gathering in front of the food “takes”, hoping for a meal to fill their families, after the services of the “World Central Kitchen” stopped. He provided meals for thousands of displaced families. The scenes that Al Jazeera conveyed from Khan Yunis recalled the war during the war and the famine and severe food shortages that accompanied it. Since the early morning hours, men, women and children have lined up in front of a tactic inside a camp with thousands of displaced people, while empty food utensils have turned into a symbol of daily suffering experienced by the camp residents, in light of the persistent humanitarian crisis.

Displaced people are the only refuge for many families who are no longer able to buy their needs from the markets due to the high prices and the deterioration of economic conditions. One of the citizens who waited for hours to get food confirmed that the outrageous high prices and the siege are pushing the people to fully rely on these food initiatives, calling for their continued support and increase in their quantities. With the start of food distribution, it became clear that the available quantities are not commensurate with the number of people waiting. Dozens are scrambling for limited rations that are hardly enough for some families for a day, while others leave without getting anything. In the crowd, a little girl stood holding a small bowl in which she got a limited amount of food, and said it was intended for seven members of her family, but admitted that it was not enough to satisfy them. When asked why she came to the hospice, she simply replied, “We don’t have the money,” stressing that the living conditions are still difficult. In another corner of the camp, another child was unable to reach the food due to the severity of the stampede. She said that she and her nine-member family are pinned her hopes on these tactics every day, but this time she returned in empty time, unable to determine what her family would eat on that day.

The displaced people confirm that the cessation of the services of the central central kitchen, in conjunction with the continuation of restrictions on the entry of aid and goods into the Gaza Strip, exacerbated the humanitarian crisis inside the camps, as food tactics became the last line of defense against hunger for thousands of families who lost their sources of income and are no longer able to secure the simplest. Its food, medicine and accommodation needs.
