Gaza Media Office: 2.15 million displaced people in the Gaza

The Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip sounded the alarm on Monday regarding the dire humanitarian conditions faced by approximately 2.15 million displaced Palestinians, including more than 800,000 living in tents unfit for human habitation.

The office issued an urgent national appeal to address the catastrophic living and housing situation of the displaced, emphasizing the urgent need to bring mobile homes and other essential shelter materials into the Gaza Strip.

The Government Media Office statement read: “We are facing shocking figures and data that reflect the scale of the housing crisis, based on documented information from the National Housing System.” It added that the total number of displaced families in the Gaza Strip is 509,393, comprising more than 2.15 million displaced individuals, all living in dire humanitarian conditions.

The statement explained that among the displaced families, 1,027,396 individuals reside inside shelters, while about 1,122,566 others reside outside them. It added that among the displaced outside the shelters, 867,288 individuals live in primitive, dilapidated, and completely worn-out tents that require immediate replacement, as they are no longer suitable for human habitation.

The office stressed that the tents were designed to be an emergency intervention for only a few months, and cannot be considered a substitute for temporary shelter until reconstruction is completed. It called on the international community to assume its legal, moral and humanitarian responsibilities by exerting pressure to allow the entry of caravans and weather-resistant tents, along with insulation materials and basic shelter supplies.
