Three years after Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, Palestinian and UN data reveal the war’s far-reaching consequences for women and girls, ranging from killing, disappearance, and injury to a surge in miscarriages, unsafe childbirth, and malnutrition.
The collapse of the healthcare system has deprived pregnant women of medical care, forcing others to give birth at home or in displacement camps. Meanwhile, the transformation of family structures has pushed thousands of women to become the primary breadwinners.
Data from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, dated July 18, 2026, shows that 12,400 women (not including girls) have been killed in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.
The data also indicates that 4,700 women and children are among the 11,200 missing persons whose fate remains unknown, with many believed to be buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings. In a report titled “The Cost of War on Women and Girls,” published in April 2026, UN Women estimated that more than 38,000 women and girls were killed between October 2023 and December 2025, an average of nearly 47 per day.
The report also stated that during the same period, 11,000 women and girls suffered injuries that will affect them for life.
The report further indicated that survivors face daily risks stemming from bombing, hunger, repeated displacement, and restrictions on access to basic services.
