A UN official said the vast amount of debris left behind by the war in Gaza, which includes unexploded ordnance, could take fourteen years to clear.
Per Ludhammar, the UN mine action officer, explained that the war left an estimated 37 million tonnes of debris in the densely populated enclave, “almost 300 kilograms of debris per square metre”.
He told a news conference in Geneva that although it is impossible to determine the exact number of unexploded ordnance found in Gaza, it is expected to take 14 years under certain conditions to remove rubble and destroyed buildings.
