Wall Street Journal reveals details of Sana’a strikes on Saudi energy facilities

A report by the Wall Street Journal, based on informed sources and eyewitnesses, revealed a preliminary toll of the damage resulting from Sana’a forces’ operations on Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, which targeted the facilities of the oil company Aramco.

According to the newspaper, the Jazan refinery caught fire and went out of service following the attacks, at a time when its production had already declined due to previous strikes.

The refinery’s operational capacity is 400,000 barrels per day, producing gasoline and ultra-low sulfur diesel.

Eyewitnesses told the newspaper that the refinery fire was visible from the city of Jazan on Tuesday morning, a field account that matches the sources’ information regarding the refinery being taken out of service.

The damage was not limited to the refining facilities in Jazan, but also included oil and gas storage facilities, including facilities at a power plant in Abha.

Khamis Mushait Air Base was also subjected to what the newspaper described as precise shelling, although the extent of damage to the base is not yet clear.

The newspaper explained that Tuesday’s attack occurred while Aramco was still assessing the damage from Monday’s strike on Jazan, before the facilities were subjected to a new attack, documenting the succession of strikes on the site over two days.

The Saudi Ministry of Energy had confirmed that fires occurred in multiple sites and that some operations were halted, indicating that efforts to contain the fires, secure the facilities, and assess the damage are ongoing, without naming the refinery or specifying the actual impact of the attacks on production and export levels.

For its part, Sana’a forces announced the execution of a wide-scale qualitative military operation, targeting Aramco in Abha, Najran, the Economic City, Aramco Jizan, and Khamis Mushait Air Base with dozens of ballistic missiles and drones.

They indicated that the operation comes in response to the Saudi escalation that targeted several Yemeni governorates, which included carrying out about 121 airstrikes, the latest of which was the targeting of the Central Correctional Facility in the Al-Hazm district of Al-Jawf, north-west of Sana’a resulting in 17 martyrs and 7 wounded, as a preliminary toll.
