French Le Monde: Yemen’s Attack Strikes the American-Saudi Alliance and Exposes Its Fragility

The French newspaper Le Monde considered that the recent Yemeni military operations constituted a new blow to the existing regional arrangements, noting that the Yemenis managed to create a rift between the US and its main ally in the region, Saudi Arabia, at a time when military developments on the western coast up to the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait imposed themselves on the ongoing discussions in New York, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly meetings.

The newspaper’s editorial writer, Gilles Paris, said that the Yemeni attack came amid the repercussions of the American-Israeli confrontation with Iran, considering that the defeat of US President Donald Trump and the Prime Minister of the enemy entity, Benjamin Netanyahu, before Iran returned the region’s calculations to a circle of doubt.

He added that the Yemeni developments dealt an additional blow to a regional system he described as a “fragile house of cards,” while developments related to strategic maritime passages increased pressures on oil markets and revealed new divisions in the region.

The newspaper linked these developments to the meeting that brought Trump together with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries in New York on September 22, considering that the meeting reflected mutual fears and calculations amid escalating Gulf differences, particularly between Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Paris concluded that the so-called “New Middle East” has collided with a harsh regional reality that imposes a reconsideration of its calculations and arrangements.
