Palestinian Rehab al-Akhras and her family have so far survived the shelling, but she fears starvation if the crossings, closed by Israel since early March, are not reopened soon, Reuters reported.
Six weeks after Israel cut off all supplies to the Gaza Strip’s 2.3 million residents, almost all the food stockpiled during the ceasefire at the beginning of the year has run out.
Emergency meal distributions have stopped, bakeries are closed, and markets are empty.
In a crowded camp sheltered only by tents made of plastic sheeting, where Rehab lives with her displaced family in Khan Younis, the 64-year-old Palestinian used scraps of cardboard to light a fire to heat the only can of fava beans she had left.
“We are 13 people. How will one can of fava beans be enough for us?” she said.
“If the crossings don’t open, people will die without food,” she added. We endured the war, we sleep and wake up amidst the bombing, but we cannot endure hunger… Let them open the crossings… The sick go without food.
