The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) confirmed on Sunday that the Gaza Strip is “the most dangerous place in the world for journalists” amid the ongoing Israeli war.
This statement was made in a post by the OHCHR on its “X” platform, marking World Press Freedom Day, which falls on May 3rd each year.
The OHCHR called on the international community to take concrete steps beyond statements of condemnation and solidarity to ensure accountability, provide protection for journalists, and guarantee independent access for international media to the Gaza Strip.
For his part, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, described the war in Gaza as a “deadly trap for the media,” noting that his office had verified the killing of nearly 300 journalists, in addition to even greater numbers being injured since October 2023.
